Birds of Boca Tapada

Boca Tapada is perhaps the most popular spot for birders. Hundreds of ornithologists come every year to photograph the species of the area, among them the Green Macaws, the King Vulture, the Red Macaws, or the Red-headed Manakin.

Diversity

One of the aspects that make Refugio Maquenque and the Boca Tapada area an ideal destination for bird watching is the diversity of ecosystems, which attracts different species. There are wetlands, lagoons, ancient meanders, flood zones, primary forest, secondary forest, charral and open pasture areas. Different and important species of trees, bushes and flowers increase even more the number of species that come to the area and that photographers can appreciate.

The Maquenque Wildlife Refuge in Boca Tapada is a nesting area for the Great Green Macaw. This is one of the few areas where you can regularly observe these majestic birds. Macaws feed on almonds (Dipteryx panamensis), which are common in the area, but almost as endangered as the birds that eat their seeds. It is important to conserve this tree species. In addition to macaws, more than 400 other bird species have been identified in Boca Tapada, including Roseate Spoonbill, Jabiru, White Ibis, Agami Heron, various species of toucans, and the Great Curassow.
