Boca Tapada is an idyllic town and tourist destination located in the most northern part of the lower basin of the San Carlos River, in the northern plains of Costa Rica. It is located on the banks of the San Carlos River, and within the Maquenque Mixed Wildlife Refuge, an ambitious project that came to safeguard the endangered flora and fauna in one of the areas of Costa Rica that in the past suffered most from deforestation and large-scale agriculture.
Natural jewel
Refugio Maquenque is located north of Boca Tapada, in the canton of San Carlos, about 130 km from San Jose and only 21 km from the San Juan River, which forms the natural border with Nicaragua. The region is enchanting with several lagoons, rivers and wetland ecosystems. Typical of the region is the rainforest, which is very rainy and humid here. A property that favors the observation of a great biodiversity. In addition, the wetland plays an important hydrological role for the surrounding basins and the entire San Carlos lowlands. The high number of bird species is due to the fact that the wetlands are an important habitat for water birds, many of which live near the large lagoon and along the San Carlos River.
A refuge of great importance
Endangered species such as the green macaw (Ara ambigua), the manatee (Trichechus manatus), the jaguar (Panthera onca) and the gaspar fish find ideal living conditions here. Four wetlands have been identified within the Maquenque Sanctuary: Maquenque, Tambor, Canacas, and Colpachí.the Maquenque Sanctuary extends on both sides of the San Carlos River, with former pastures that are now being reforested or destined to recover. In the future, they will form an uninterrupted transition to one of the oldest forests in northern Costa Rica. A total of 139 mammals, 135 reptiles, 80 amphibians and 424 birds were identified.
