Explore the Rio San Juan and the Indio Maiz Reserve in Nicaragua with this tour departing from Costa Rica
This twelve hour tour includes a descent of the San Juan River and is a complete adventure in the style of the best TV programs about survival and adventure such as National Geographic or Discovery Channel. It takes place in one of the largest biological reserves in Central America and the world, known as Reserva Biologica Indio Maiz. Indio Maiz is a place of mythical stories and stunning flora and fauna. There are many different stories that are told about these jungles, such as the war problems that occurred in Nicaragua in the eighties with the coup d'etat perpetuated by the U.S. against the president known as Anastacio Zomosa. Pirates and indigenous mosquinos who still live in these jungles.
With the tour, we leave Tapir Lodge at 7 am after breakfast, and take local artisan fishing equipment, some fruits, coconuts to eat during the day and start the tour heading to the Nicaraguan military border post to inform them of our passage through the San Juan River. The first strategic stop is to visit the "Machao" canal, which is a natural channel that enters the heart of the Indio Maiz Reserve. In this channel we will have lunch and spend an incredible day watching and listening to many species of birds, mammals that come to drink water in the channel such as deer, coaties, tapirs and even with luck, the Jaguar. You can also see three types of monkeys (spider, howler and capuchin), many basilisk iguanas and insects of beautiful shapes and colors. Also, if we are lucky we can see some manatees in the channel as they enter this maze of natural channels to feed on algae and some types of herbs that are born on the banks of the channel!
For our lunch we need fresh fish ! After a fire in the jungle where we will have a meal in the middle of nature, our adventure ends when our friend Eddy Martinez, better known as the "Capi" arrives in a motor boat to take us back to Tapir Lodge. During the return it is possible sometimes to have the possibility to observe sunsets with impressive colors that mix with the green of the mountains and some colors of flowers of some trees. This end of the tour is really a spectacle of colors.
